Creation: Class 1 (5 min)

Join Makoto Fujimura in the classroom as we begin our journey of Theology of Making. In the beginning, God created (Genesis 1:1). It is one of the large themes of my new book to see the redemptive act of God, the ultimate act of Christ’s sacrifice at the cross of Calvary, through the lens of creation and the Holy Spirit’s work to awaken in us the potential of the new creation. My focus is to see this entire Gospel narrative be affirmed. Further, we are invited as God’s co-heirs to co-create into that future (Romans 8:16). — Makoto Fujimura
Watch Now

Nihonga (9 min)

Mako Fujimura talks about the Japanese style of painting known as Nihonga. Drawing the connection between the elements of his art (crushed minerals, the investment of time) and the culture of Japan, Mako takes us on a journey inside the mind and spirit of the Artist.

Watch Now

Fall: Class 2 (7 min)

Join Makoto Fujimura in the classroom as we continue our journey of Theology of Making. “For mysterious reasons, God chooses to depend on fallen creatures to steward God’s gifts, as poignantly signaled by the incarnate child in the manger who, though he was God, needed human help to survive. Through this weakness and vulnerability, God incarnates into the world full of danger and violence.” — Makoto Fujimura
Watch Now

Ground Zero (8 min)

We live in a fallen world in which every good, true and beautiful reality is quickly idolized to something selfish, greedy and destructive. Christ came to redeem this path to self-destruction by taking on all of our “pride of the flesh” on the Cross. Christ is the God of Ground Zero. “Ground Zero,” in Christ, can also mean a cancellation point, a new beginning where we can stand on the ashes of the wasteland we see and still seek renewal and “genesis moments.”
Watch Now

Reflection (1 min)

Mako reflects on the concept of the Fall.
Watch Now

From Fall to Redemption: Holy Saturday (2 min)

Between crucifixion and resurrection lies Holy Saturday. Ground Zero moments produce Holy Saturday meditations, requiring of us faith that after the fall there will be new creation. Holy Saturday is where we await the redemption and new creation promised to us.
Watch Now

Redemption: Class 3 (6 min)

“Many will assume that the word “redemption” includes this invitation to co-create into the future. But often, the term “redemption” is understood as our return to a perfected state, rather than the new. There has been much theology written on redemptive purposes for salvation, purposeful goals, but when it comes to this new creation which the various writers of the Bible point to, we have very little in the way of a theologically developed thesis.” — Makoto Fujimura
Watch Now

Kintsugi (6 min)

When precious tea bowls break, the families of Japanese tea masters will often keep the broken bowls for generations and later have them mended by artisans who use a lavish technique known as Kintsugi. The Japanese word Kin means “gold,” and Tsugi means “mend,” and a bowl mended with gold is more valuable than the original tea bowl was before it broke. As we move from fall to redemption and into new creation, God is mending our brokenness and making us more valuable than we were.
Watch Now

Reflection (1 min)

Pete Candler and Dr. Curt Thompson reflect on the concept of Redemption.
Watch Now

Redemption to New Creation: Silent Steps (3 min)

When success and renown proved ineffective definers of his identity, Andrew Nemr takes the shattered pieces and mends them together — dancing not for fame, but in the presence of his Lord.
Watch Now

New Creation: Class 4 (8 min)

When we make, we tap into the generative possibility that flows out of Genesis 1, and encounter the Spirit’s reality to manifest in our brokenness; we also realize that even shattered vessels can, under the Master’s illumination, lead to new creation. A creative journey allows for exploration of a divine plan for our “deep calls to deep” journey (Psalm 42) even through darkness, doubt, and suffering; there is a relationship between such redemptive purposes and a call for us to create into the new creation. This call has been part of the Spirit’s guidance on my journey as an artist. Christ’s sacrifice leads to the beautiful, into the heart of new creation. — Makoto Fujimura
Watch Now

Columbine (4 min)

The columbine flower was the early church's symbol for the Holy Spirit. The delicate flowers symbolize perfectly the fragility of lives, so young, haunted by the encroaching darkness of violence. Linking with the concept of Kintsugi, Mako discusses how a wounded culture can wrestle with ground zero realities and move toward healing and new creation.
Watch Now

Reflection (1 min)

Pete Candler and Dr. Curt Thompson reflect on the concept of New Creation.
